How do account security questions work?

Q. How does the online method for confirming identity work?

A. Here's how it works:
  1. We securely send necessary personal information to a third-party vendor that specializes in identity verification.
  2. The vendor creates multiple security questions from information about you in public databases. You'll have a limited time to answer each question.
  3. We securely transmit your answers back to the vendor to be checked. UC does not store or view any of this information.
  4. The vendor securely sends a message telling us whether the questions were answered correctly.
  5. If they were answered correctly, you can then create your own password and start using the system right away.

Q. What kinds of questions could I be asked?

A. The questions are personal in nature and are likely ones that only you would know.
You may be asked about your current and former addresses and people you are—or have been—related to, including spouses and ex-spouses. For example, you might get a question like this:

Which of the following people have you known?
